"Before I met Kipper, I'd been doing all my own programming. It's actually very laborious. We imagine that computers help us save time, but they just present us with more options than we can deal with. I was spending more time sequencing drum and keyboard parts than I was composing.
"Impulsively, I asked Kipper if he could come and work with me at our house in Italy. I'd seen how quickly we worked on "Freak the Mighty." The idea was that we would work together for a few days and see how things progressed. It went well -- so well, in fact, that Kipper ended up staying for the next two albums, and together we became a kind of musical Freak the Mighty.
"At the time that we were working on this album, there was a lot of premillennial hokum about the "end being nigh," doomsday, and Y2K. I wanted to go against all that and sing something optimistic. Optimism, I've always thought, is the best strategy. Who but the most cynical of us would want to be right about the end of the world? No, I think we make the world every day. Collectively, individually, by intention or accident, we dream our world into being. We just have to be careful what we dream" (Sting 227-228).
Here's what Sting has to say about the song itself:
"Kipper was playing a lovely sequence of elegiac chords one morning in the studio. I soon became obsessed with trying to unearth a song from this bedrock. I locked myself away for days, appearing only briefly at dinner, before scurrying back to my rooms, hollow-eyed and largely uncommunicative. Some songs are a walk in the park, while others are a more difficult quarry.
"And the image of the Tower of Souls would come back to haunt me after the archmillennialist's coup de théâtre of 9/11" (Sting 229).
